UPDATE: 8/4 - Kim has been home for a week and half and is getting stronger daily. She is also in remission now. The planning for the transplant is intensifying and will likely take place this month. A donor and several cord bloods are being considered and are near matches. Kim and I are grateful and overwhelmed by the generosity and support offered. Thank you. The transplant process is challenging and we appreciate your continued support and hope to have more good news soon.
Kim's journey began with a simple blood test the Friday before Memorial Day. She went on to spend her weekend playing with Noah, Jake, and Talia and even took them for a bicycle ride with David. Little did anyone suspect that within a week of Memorial Day, she would be admitted to Mt. Sinai hospital for treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia -- where she continues currently.
Kim has since learned that she will need a bone marrow transplant to help her body fight the Leukemia cells. The missing piece is a donor who will match her protein profile.
Here is how you can help. The Gift of Life has a backlog of donor kits (i.e., a potential match for Kim) that need processing. However, the organization does not have enough funding to pay for the processing (now $54 per kit). We are asking for your help in making funds available. Any amount contributed goes to processing kits. As the donor kits are processed, they will be entered into the national bone marrow database that will help Kim and others. Time is of the essence. It takes three weeks to process a kit, add a donor to the national bone marrow database and determine if a donor is a potential match.
Kim's doctors want her to have this transplant as soon as possible. Due to your heartfelt generosity, we hope to have good news to report to you at a later date. Thank you for your support of Kim and our family.
