In January 2009, thirteen-month-old Carter Nedley was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). With a survival rate of less than 50 percent, AML is among the most difficult childhood cancers to treat.
Still, for the next 14 months, Carter bravely fought his disease. Through lengthy stays in three hospitals across Ohio he endured several rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone-marrow transplant. Tragically, however, Carter passed away in February 2010.
To honor their son's life, the Nedley family established The Carter Nedley Foundation to serve children in Northeast Ohio affected by cancer. The Foundation holds regular hospital-based events that improve the quality of life for childhood cancer patients, and provides needed financial support to their families. It also raises funds for research into treatments for childhood cancer, and advocates for issues relevant to the treatment of childhood cancer. (For more information, please visit carternedley.org.)
