Each summer parents send their children to camp for fun, and to have engaging and meaningful experiences. Many camps teach their campers about famous Jewish Heroes in history – who they were and what they accomplished. The question of today is, What does a contemporary hero look like and what does it mean to be a hero?
At Gift of Life, our heroes are our donors, everyday people who are willing to donate bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells to save life the of a stranger.
At camp, these heroes could be a counselor, camp director, assistant director, parent, or even someday, the camper! Teaching the concept of saving life teaches camp communities about being an active part of the greater community. It teaches staff members that they can share this learning experience with not only their campers, but with their community and college campuses. Campers can share the information with their parents and their hometown communities and ultimately become a donor themselves when they reach the age of 18.
Teaching camp communities is accomplished in several ways depending on the needs of the individual camp. Some camps request on-site vists from past donors and recipients, while others educate their camp through a video that interviews a donor and receipient.
Bone marrow recruitment drives are also flexible and can be held during staff week, family visiting day, or opening day.
