Gators for Donors was formed in October 2010 at the University of Florida. Started by volunteers with Footprints Buddy and Support Program, the aim was to reach out to the student community and involve them in their efforts to fight for their buddies fighting cancer in the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Shands Hospital for Children at the University of Florida, many awaiting matches for bone marrow tranplants.
Teaming up with UF Hillel, over 400 student donors were registered in their first 2 day drive on campus. Since then, the circle has grown to involve various other student organizations that help sponsor and recruit the volunteers to put on the annual donor drives. The team has also expanded throughout the state, putting on donor drives at various community events, such as Dance Marathon at Florida State University and 5k For the Kids in Miami. Gators for Donors continues to be inspired by all the brave kids fighting cancer and their special little heroes whom they fight in memory of.
