Summary Statement
The Medical Services RN will be responsible for working alongside the Nurse Practitioners in educating, consulting, and screening to qualify donors for white blood cell and/or peripheral blood stem cell collections for transplant and medical research. Works collaboratively as a member of the team and in alignment with the values of the organization.
Education
Associates Degree required. RN License for State of Florida required.
Responsibilities
- Review Health History screening in compliance with current guidelines to determine donor eligibility and suitability in a timely manner to meet deadlines
- Identify any potential medical risks to the donor and/or the recipient
- Communicate relevant health-related information and risks to Donor Center Coordinator per protocol
- Assist with providing medical evaluation during the donor preparation prior to donation
- Complete and meticulously document all required paperwork, as well as enter info into proprietary in-house software system MatchQuest
- Assist with physical examinations as needed
- Demonstrate a high level of sensitivity, appreciation and empathy in dealing with donors
- Consult with donors regarding overview of the white blood cell or peripheral blood stem cell donation process and address all donor questions and concerns
- Communicate all findings and issues to Medical Services Manager, Associate Director of Medical Services, and/or supervising physician
- This position also requires occasional flexibility to increase effort as needed for cross-coverage purposes.
- Follow up with donors as needed while they are receiving Filgrastim, and document
- Provide education service to other GOL staff members
- On-call Saturday and Sunday hours as needed
- Other duties as assigned based on program needs
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Quick to learn, motivated self-starter
- Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, and ability to learn proprietary software
- Critical thinker
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Experience functioning in a regulated environment and following standard operating procedures
- Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the State of Florida Board of Nursing Registered Nurses
- Ability to work independently while under the supervision of the medical director
- Excellent English language skills essential. Fluency in Spanish desired but not required
- Experience in blood donation, marrow transplantation, or cellular therapies is desirable.
Physical Demands
This position is basically sedentary with some walking, standing, stooping, and lifting required. May lift objects weighing from 0 to 20 lbs. with occasional lifting of objects over 20 lbs.
