We all probably know someone who has been affected in some way by a life threatening illness. Modern medicine has given hope to thousands of patients requiring a bone marrow transplant in order to fight their disease and live their lives. It is difficult to comprehend the fact that a love one may not find a bone marrow match when chances are their match is out there. It is even more disturbing to fathom that a potential donor’s cells might not be processed in time to save a life due to lack of funding. I became involved with GOLYPC to raise awareness of the seemingly simple concept of 'a match, anywhere, anytime’, as well as to honor the memory of the people in my life who were not lucky enough to win their own battles with cancer. I am also celebrating those in my life who were fortunate enough to be given that sweet gift of life. Now I, along with an extensive board of committed and enthusiastic people who have been similarly touched by Gift of Life, am helping to launch this 3 month "swab-a-thon" to add 350 potential donors to the Gift of Life bone marrow registry and to raise a collective $25,000 which will go towards processing new registered donors.
