Saxton's Army

Help us save lives in memory of Saxton Dunlap

In 2020, Gift of Life recieveda call from the Dunlap family about their son, Saxton, who was in a fight for his life to survive T-cell lymphoma – his only hope was to find a matching stem cell donor. 

Saxton was just 18 years old and about to start his collegiate lacrosee career at Webber International University (WIU). Unfortunately, this incredible young man lost his battle with blood cancer before a donor could be found. Because he was multiracial, it was more difficult to find him a donor – and this is why we need everyone to join the registry: the more people who join, the more the registry becomes genetically diverse, and the more chance here are to find matches for patients. 

In Saxon's memory, his parents Kristy and Alan and WIU Lacrosse Coach Chris Burdick (pictured above) started the "Saxton's Swab #2 Save Challenge" to encourage high school and collegiate lacrosse players to learn about our mission, swab theircheeks, and join Gift of Life for their chance to save someone's life.  

Lacrosse players are incredible matches!

The statistics for matches between lacrosse players and patients are higher than any other group in Gift of LIfe's registry! To date, lacrosse players have been matched with dozens of patients, and many lives saved through transplants. What an incredible legacy for Saxton and the Dunlap family. 

What You Can Do

  • Join the registry! If you are 18-35 and in good health, you may be a match for a patient in need. Click on the blue "Get Swabbed" button. 
  • Sponsor a swab kit. Lab processing of every kit costs $60. Your contribution will help add new donors to the registry, who may be a match for patients diagnosed with blood cancer, sickle cell, or inherited immune disorders. Click on the orange "Give to My Circle" button.
  • Run a drive: if you'd like to run a drive with your lacrosse team, at your school, or in your community, contact Traci Ackerman, tackerman@giftoflife.org, or call her at 561-982-2939. 
  • Spread the word. Use the social media links to the right to share Saxton's story in your Facebook and Twitter account. The more people who order a swab kit and join the registry, the more genetically diverse we can make the registry, and more lives can be saved.
