When Jacob Kowalik was first diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), he did not show any signs of being sick. He was like any typical first-grader, outgoing, loved playing sports, and always had a mischievous look in his eyes. However, Jacobs family learned that he could develop leukemia from MDS, and his doctors told them hed need a bone marrow transplant. In 2009, at the age of 5, Jacob had his life-saving transplant, thanks to his donor, Marshal.
Jacob found his miracle match, and now it is your turn to take action. Here are some ways that you can help:
1. Make a financial contribution: Your donation will help sponsor donor kits on our waitlist. Each kit costs $54 to process, and any amount will help! Please click the "Contribute" button to make a donation now.
2. Join the Registry: At any given time, 6,000 people in need of a bone marrow transplant are looking for their perfect match, and that person could be you. Visit www.giftoflife.org/register to take the first steps towards saving a life.
3. Organize your own donor drive: Gift of Life Ambassadors and volunteers hold donor recruitment drives in communities and on college campuses around the country. It's easy to run your own. Contact 1-800-9MARROW (1-800-927-769) and speak to our Recruitment Office or email info@giftoflife.org
