Carole is 53 and adopted. Shortly before Chanukah 2011, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML is the most aggressive form of Leukemia). Within 2 weeks of beginning her first treatment, doctors determined that because of a mutation on her chromosome 7, chemotherapy was unlikely to cure her leukemia. Her best prognosis would be a bone marrow transplant.
Carole was adopted, and although not enough is known about her biological parents to be certain, we believe at least her mother was Ashkenazi, and probably her father. Because of the circumstances, it is highly unlikely that she has any known siblings.
There are several ways you can help Carole.
First, Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation seeks to increase the number of Jewish people registered as donors. While their efforts at gathering samples of possible donors have had success, there is a backlog of samples needing to be tested due to lack of funds. Each sample costs $54 to process. There is a link on this page to contribute to that effort on Carole's behalf. Any donation made from this page will go directly towards testing backlogged samples - specifically Ashkenazi donors. All contributions are fully tax deductible.
Second, register as a donor. We welcome and encourage all donors to join our registry. By clicking here bit.ly/getSWABBED4Carole, you may register as a donor without cost by entering the sponsorship code "nostoneunturned" on the payment screen. After reading more information about the testing and donation process, you will answer some preliminary health screening questions. If you are eligible, you will be sent a kit that will allow you to swab the inside of your cheek. That's all it takes!
Third, get the word out. Send a link to this page to everyone you know. The url is http://www.giftoflife.org/dc/no%2Dstone%2Dunturned%2Fblog%2Easpx . You can also use http://bit.ly/No_Stone_Unturned. With nearly 7 billion people in the world, only 19 million are registered donors. While some people are not eligible to be donors because of age or health reasons, there are literally hundreds of millions of people who could be donors who are not registered. Every eligible person who registers potentially moves Carole and other patients with leukemia one step closer to a cure.
Fourth, help organize a drive for new donors in your community. Click here to get more information. bit.ly/OrganizeADrive4Carole
