For patients with blood cancer, the best chance of finding a match lies with those of similar race and ethnicity because tissue type is inherited. Current statistics reveal a stark health disparity: only 48% of Hispanic/Latino patients, 47% of Asian/Pacific Islanders, and 29% of Black/African American and multiracial patients can find matching donors. This means a Black or multiracial patient has less than a one-in-three chance of finding a life-saving match.
While many in our medical community are past the age to swab, we can directly provide the funding to add the next generation of donors to the registry.
The Challenge: Patients of diverse backgrounds are historically underrepresented in the donor pool.
The Cost: It costs $60 for laboratory processing for each new donor kit.
The Goal: To sponsor the recruitment and typing of young, diverse donors.
Your contribution is a direct investment in health equity. By funding a kit today, you are ensuring that a patient’s ancestry never determines their access to a cure.
Note on Eligibility: Anyone 18 to 35 years old and in general good health may join the registry. By international agreement through the World Marrow Donor Association, all accredited registries have an upper age limit of 60 years. This limit is based on medical fact: patients have a significantly higher chance of survival when their donor is younger.
