When it comes to bone marrow donation, a patient's best chance of finding a genetic match lies with those of similar ethnic background. Unfortunately, the worldwide registry was not representative of all ethnic groups, among others, the Jewish ethnicity. The Gift of Life organization was established for that reason- to increase the chances of Jewish patients to find their match by creating a database of Jewish bone marrow donors.
It is only natural for us to team up- Ezra and Gift of Life and search potential donors among our Birthright participants. We in Ezra get so much positive feedback from the participants claiming that they feel lucky not just getting the opportunity to see Israel and connect their Jewish identity, but also get a chance to maybe save lives one day. The Gift of Life volunteers manage to present the story and the idea in such a fascinating way that inspires few of our participants also to get active in a field they find close to their heart. Gift of Life is a truly gift- a gift to all the patients their lives were saved, a gift to all the donor that were honored to save lives and to us, for giving a greater meaning to our Birthright trips.
