Hi! My name is Gavi Aspler, and I am becoming a Bar Mitzvah on June 24, 2017. For my Mitzvah project, I have decided to raise awareness and money to help the organization, Gift of Life. Gift of Life works to increase awareness about blood cancers (bone marrow and stem cell cancers). They have a registry of people's DNA so that if someone becomes sick with blood cancer, they can help to find a match. When my mom was pregnant with me, my Dad was a donor for Gift of Life and our family's special connection with the organization began. I will also be hosting a donor drive at my shul (TBDJ) on Purim night, March 11, 2017, to get more of my Montreal community onto the registry. In order to get into this registry, all people need to do is have their cheek swabbed with a cotton swab! If they are found to be a match with someone in need of bone marrow or stem cells, they will be contacted, and they then have a chance to become an actual donor! The best candidates are young adults between the ages of 18 and 45.
In order to process these swabbing kits, Gift of Life needs $60 per kit. For my mitzvah project, I'm also aiming to collect enough money for 18 kits! Please join my Donor Circle and help me raise money to process people's swab kits. You will be helping to provide children and adults who are sick with leukemia or lymphoma a chance to recover. You could save a life!
