Meghan Heckelman characterizes her BC experience as a lab for her development as a servant leader. She was elected the 56th president of the Undergraduate Government of Boston College after a term as vice president the previous year. In addition to her stints as an orientation leader and Appalachia Volunteers program student leader, she served for three years as a campus ambassador for the Gift of Life Marrow Registry, inspiring students to help those with blood cancer.

Since November 2022, five individuals who joined the national bone marrow registry drives at SUNY Orange, hosted in partnership with the Gift of Life Marrow Registry, have been matched with patients needing life-saving transplants, the college recently announced.

AEPi’s 11-year partnership with Gift of Life continues to save lives. Since 2004, nearly 24,000 students have entered the bone marrow donation database as a result of AEPi Brothers’ efforts, 945 have matched with those who are seriously ill and in need. Of those matches, 105 lives have been saved as a result of AEPi’s swabbing and awareness programs.
