You can lace up your sneakers and help find a cure for blood cancer this weekend. The Gift of Life Steps for Life South Florida 5K is happening on Sunday, Jan. 21 on the Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton.

Three years ago, Alan received a life-altering phone call delivering an Acute Myeloid Leukemia diagnosis. Alan navigated the difficult road of finding a bone marrow match. Alan had to rely on his family, friends and strangers' generosity through initiatives like The Gift of Life. His donor gave Alan a chance at life through a spur-of-the-moment decision at a campus event to sign up to be a donor.

A bone marrow donor and recipient were honored at the Amerant Bank Arena during Hockey Fights Cancer night in Sunrise, Monday. Owen Hern said that he was just doing a good deed with his college friends in 2018. Little did he know, he was saving the life of of William Anderson, who was battling leukemia.

As a physician’s assistant in West Palm Beach, Fla, Rose Bradwell knows all too well the delicate balance between living life with and managing one with a chronic condition. In 2020, the wife and mother of three daughters was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and is now seeking a stem cell transplant to help treat her cancer. Her best bet for survival? Finding a donor who’s black and of Haitian descent.

The Panthers will facilitate a bone marrow donor and Gift of Life recipient first-time meeting during the game and fans can participate in the Gift of Life Donor Recruitment Drive inside main doors. Fans ages 18 to 35 who would like to join the Gift of Life, but are unable to attend the game on Nov. 20, may order a swab kit online here: giftoflife.org/register.

After three days of tabling at Syracuse University, Annie’s Army has collected 225 swabs for Gift of Life’s bone marrow registry in honor of Annie Eisner, a former SU student who died in August. Gift of Life, a ???national bone marrow and blood stem cell registry that facilitates transplants for people with life-threatening blood cancer, partnered with Syracuse Hillel, co-educational service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega and the SU sorority chapters of Alpha Epsilon Phi and Sigma Delta Tau for a bone marrow registry "mega-drive."
