A Denver man who has overcome cancer twice credits his survival to a perfect stranger. Now Dave Fromson is paying it forward. Fromson and his coworkers at Martinez Fire Protection put together a donor recruitment drive on Wednesday.

The Gift of Life Marrow Registry in Boca Raton is celebrating a lifesaving milestone of 500 blood stem cell donations. It's an achievement that couldn't be made without the help of selfless individuals. The Gift of Life-Be The Match Collection Center is the first such facility to be integrated within a registry.

By simply taking four swabs of cells from the inside of your mouth, it’s possible to save someone else’s life, because for every 400 swabs, there’s a bone marrow match, according to the nonprofit Gift of Life Marrow Registry, which teamed up again with the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway to hold a bone marrow testing event last Sunday. The collection was intended to help a Cedarhurst resident named Shlomo who was previously diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.

If you save one life, it is as if you have saved the world. Saving a human life seems like it would be difficult. How do you do that? Fight fires? Perform emergency surgery? Stop a war? Those would be great things to do, but there’s an easier way. Get your cheek swabbed.

The Gift of Life Marrow Registry, a public bone marrow and blood stem cell registry, is launching a swab campaign with the goal of finding a match for Steve, an active member of both his local and the broader Jewish community. Steve’s family reached out to the Gift of Life in the hope of creating a network of specifically Ashkenazi Jews (but everyone should swab!) who could potentially be a match.
