Smyth Swabbed To Save A Life

On an average November day last year, Tim Smyth saw a couple of his friends at the Project Life Movement bone marrow drive on Gasson Quad and decided to get his cheek swabbed. Less than six months later, Smyth, BC ’22, would donate stem cells to an anonymous leukemia patient with about a 25 percent chance of survival.

IU Gift of Life ambassadors to hold Swab Week on campus Nov. 11-18

IU student ambassadors and volunteers for the Gift of Life Marrow Registry will set up tables across campus to recruit donors for blood stem cell and bone marrow transplants Nov. 11-18. 18 as part of Swab Week. Their goal is to inform students of the organization and increase the number of people on their registry to better help find matches for patients.

During the last week of October, the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts hosted the Swab a Cheek, Save a Life bone marrow registry drive in front of the Student Union. The organization, part of the group Gift of Life [Marrow Registry], seeks to get people to enter the national marrow registry.

FAU Lacrosse players partner with Gift of Life to donate stem cells to cancer patients

Lacrosse player Adam LeBlanc joined the Gift of Life registry and donated stem cells to a matched patient, giving them a chance at a new life. he registry reached out to the FAU men’s lacrosse team, which LeBlanc is a member of, last November. They specifically interacted with the team because of the "Lacrosse Swab Off" challenge, which Gift of Life created in memory of a patient who was also a lacrosse player.
