Leukemia and other blood cancers affect over 300,000 people in the United States alone. Individuals affected by these diseases only have a 1 in 4 chance of finding a match within their family. If they cannot find a match there, they must look to the International Donor Registry which is their last hope at finding a cure. Unfortunately, the registry does not provide the same chances at finding a match for every person.

10-year-old with cancer sparks bone marrow recruitment drives in Great Neck

Last weekend several temples and Jewish centers in Great Neck took part in helping Elan Shademan, a 10-year-old boy battling to avoid leukemia, by hosting bone marrow and stem cell donor recruitment drives. The donor drives were held on Saturday and Sunday at Temple Israel, Beth Hadassah Synagogue, the Mashadi Jewish Center and the Babylonian Jewish Center.

Gregory Mitchell, 30, a financial advisor, donated stem cells last year to Marcus Haggins, 9, who was battling Severe Aplastic Anemia.

For about 15 years, San Rafael resident Alison Roberts had been living with polycythemia vera, or PV, a rare form of blood cancer, when suddenly she experienced complications with her medication. "It was two years ago that I found out I also had acute myeloid leukemia," said Roberts, 69, referring to another aggressive blood cancer.
