Scout aims to fight blood, bone marrow cancer

A local Boy Scout has taken on a service project he hopes could save lives. Dylan Mistretta, 14, is working toward becoming an Eagle Scout with Belwood Troop #413 with a bone marrow drive called "Give a Swab, Save a Life." The Burns Middle School student has been hosting bone marrow drives around the county for several months.

Bruriah senior Chana Rutner organized this year’s Gift of Life swabbing drive. According to Ellen Azizollahoff, faculty adviser for this drive, "This was our most successful drive yet. Amazingly, three matches have been found from our drives, since we started running them in 2011."

When Birthright Can Be A Life-Saving Trip

What many say can be a life-changing trip for young Jews can be a life-saving one as well, it turns out. For the past 14 years, the Florida-based nonprofit Gift of Life has offered presentations to Birthright’s North American participants about the importance of becoming a potential bone marrow or stem cell donor and the opportunity to enter its registry.
