Hit A Capella Group Sings to Raise Awareness for Bone Marrow Donation
The Maccabeats, the hit a capella singing group, continued their Miracle Match Campaign to benefit Gift of Life with the release of a new video entitled “Shine.” Complete with a new, original song written by the group, the video which has been viewed over 171,000 times, sheds light on the brightness that comes from continuing the campaign this holiday season.
Last year, The Maccabeats created the Miracle Match Campaign in memory of one of the group’s founders, Michael Greenberg’s beloved mother Judy, who passed away from leukemia. Hoping to raise $80,000 over the eight nights of Chanukah and create miracles for others in need of transplants, The Maccabeats were overjoyed to surpass that goal by over $10,000! Thanks to those efforts, over 1,700 donor swab kits were processed and 25 matches were found!
The new video, “Shine”, weaves the story of how a simple fundraiser can help support a recruitment drive which ultimately results in a match being identified for a patient. Michael Greenberg said, “Chanukah is about miracles and we have to remember that everyone can play a role in making miracles happen.” He continued, “Last year's campaign taught us that individual people like us can make a difference through fundraising. We wanted to share this lesson with others, especially kids. What a great message to teach people at a young age: you can change the world; you can save lives.”
Mayim Bialik, who stars in the CBS hit series, Big Bang Theory, has continued to lend her support to the Miracle Match Campaign, bringing even more attention to the cause.
Each year, over 10,000 people are in need of a transplant, but only 5,000 will receive the lifesaving treatment. Others may die because they lack suitably matched donors. Gift of Life’s donor registry improves the chances that matches will be found for patients in need.
Gift of Life’s Founder and Executive Director, Jay Feinberg said, "We are incredibly honored that The Maccabeats are continuing their campaign with us.” He explained, “I was lucky enough to find my miracle match, however there are many other patients still waiting to find theirs.”
