As 2012 comes to a close, all of us at Gift of Life are proud to reflect back on a year that was packed with heartwarming stories, courageous and selfless donors, impressive events, generous supporters and most importantly, lives saved. In the year ahead, we will continue to work tirelessly toward our goal: A match. Anytime. Anywhere. For anyone. Here is a look at some of our most important accomplishments this year.
Gift of Life’s Donor Recruitment team worked with volunteers and drive coordinators adding over 27,000 new donors to the registry and running more than 860 donor recruitment drives. Over 1,000 potential matches were identified for patients needing transplants around the world, and Gift of Life’s Donor Services professionals facilitated 121 lifesaving transplants.
Throughout the year, we celebrated with donors and recipients as they met for the very first time, and were grateful that they shared their personal stories to illustrate just how important our work is. A few of these special moments took place at the 12th Annual Partners for Life Gala, the 2nd Annual Walk for Life in Boca Raton, Florida, the inaugural Walk for Life in New Jersey and at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, just moments before a game.
Of course, Gift of Life would not be able to continue its lifesaving work without the generous support of our contributors. With 215,220 potential donors currently on the registry, our dream of a registry 300,000 donors strong is within reach, but will only be realized if we can raise the funds to pay for donor testing. Fundraising events such as The Real Estate Board of New York’s Annual Pro-Am Tennis Tournament and The Marrow Match Gala, hosted by Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford and chaired by NY1 News anchor Jessica Abo, are just two examples of the many amazing efforts to raise funds for Gift of Life this year.
Thank you to everyone who supported Gift of Life this year. Whether you swabbed your cheek, coordinated a donor drive, volunteered at an event, shared your personal story, donated marrow or blood stem cells or contributed much needed funds, you have directly helped us in our mission to save lives. We all look forward to even more incredible accomplishments in 2013!
