Ready, Set...Walk for Gift of Life!

Sep 27, 2010 by Gift of Life News
It’s time to put on your walking shoes, gather your family, friends and neighbors and join the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation for its first “Walk for Life” on Sunday, January 9, 2011.  The walk will be held at the South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, Florida.  Registration begins at 8:00 AM and the walk starts at 9:00 AM.

The Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation announced its first “Walk for Life” to educate the community about its life-saving mission of facilitating bone marrow, blood stem cell and umbilical cord blood transplants for children and adults suffering from life threatening illnesses.   Because tissue type is inherited, the best chance of finding a genetic match lies with those of similar ethnic background.  Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, one of North America’s public bone marrow, blood stem cell and umbilical cord blood registries, is the only registry dedicated to recruitment within the Jewish community.  The organization has added much needed ethnic diversity to the donor pool.

Chaired by Wendy Schulman of Delray Beach, the Walkathon will publicize the need for an ethnically diverse pool of potential bone marrow donors, help recruit new donors to the registry and garner financial support for the organization. "It is so important to support the Gift of Life because of the number of lives it saves.  Leukemia cases are increasing year by year and we are able to save more lives each year as our registry grows.  This walk for life may be the walk to save the life of one you love,” said Mrs. Schulman.  Joining her in coordinating this fun-filled event are Susan Emby, Debbie Englehardt, Jill Goldsmith, Donna Krasner, Wendi Lipsich, Jessica Offir, Vicki Schwartz, Liz Shaw and Debbie Simon.   “You don’t need to be in Florida to be a part of this inaugural walk," added Schulman.  “You can register, organize a team and walk in your own community or in a local shopping mall. This will help spread our message to more communities around the United States.
