In 2009, Chaim was attending Yeshivat Reishit in Israel, he came across the opportunity to join Gift of Life’s registry of donors, he was inspired and felt it was something worthwhile to do. While he did not expect to be called as a match, “in a million years!” he was glad when the call did come. Chaim said, “Being told I could potentially save someone’s life made me happier than I ever thought I could be, and it was all the motivation I needed to proceed. It has given me a much more positive outlook on life, and I am grateful to have been able to help.”
Chaim explained that throughout the donation process, what kept him motivated were thoughts of his recipient and how brave she was, as well as the support of family and friends, which was incredible and meaningful. Chaim said, “The bottom line about the process is, if I had to do it again, I would do it immediately, no hesitation.”
The young hero did not stop at donating. Chaim is finishing off the school year by giving others the opportunity to save a life too. Chaim is running his own drive at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, where he is currently studying. He hopes that by sharing his donation story, he will inspire others to join the registry and donate as well. Chaim wants people to know that, “This experience will forever be, to me, the greatest thing I have ever done. It gives me hope for the future, and I feel it has made me a better person today.” He added, “Supporting Gift of Life is about supporting people all around the world. To be able to save a life is a very powerful thing.”
Chaim is anxiously looking forward to getting updates on his recipient’s progress. He noted, “As long as she lives a longer and healthier life, whether she contacts me or not, I am happy I was able to help. Her health is constantly on my mind, and I pray for her all the time.”
Twenty-one-year old Chaim lives in Baltimore, Maryland. He enjoys drumming, music, cooking, writing poetry and being there to help those who just need someone to talk to.
