Hillel Hits Milestone with 200th Bone Marrow Transplant

Aug 27, 2015 by Gift of Life News
A recent bone marrow donation marked the 200th donor sponsored by Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation partner, Hillel International. Incredibly, this was the second time this donor was called as a match!

Attorney Zack Domb joined the registry in 2005 at University of California's Santa Barbara Hillel. He donated for the first time in 2009 and again last week—this time to a man suffering from myelodysplastic disorder. While not unheard of, it is rare for a donor to be called as a match for two different patients.

"Who would have known that, when I randomly walked by a table registering people for Gift of Life, I would be able to help save two lives," said Domb. “I am very grateful that I was called again to donate.”

Gift of Life and Hillel partnered more than 10 years ago. Together, we have raised awareness on college campuses across North America about the life-saving potential of bone marrow transplants and the importance of joining Gift of Life's registry as a volunteer donor.

“This is an incredible milestone and I am so proud to share that 200 lives have been saved through our partnership with Hillel," said Jay Feinberg, founder and CEO of Gift of Life. "The support and dedication received from students at Hillels across the country has been tremendous and we look forward to continuing to work together for many years to come.”

Hillel, the world's largest Jewish campus organization with over 550 locations, welcomes students of all backgrounds and fosters an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning, and Israel. Hillel builds connections with emerging adults and inspires them to explore and celebrate their Jewish identity through its global network of regional centers, campus Foundations and Hillel student organizations.

“We are incredibly proud of our partnership with the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation and the number of lives we have saved,” said Hillel International’s President and CEO Eric D. Fingerhut. “Registering to be a bone marrow donor and offering a donation is one of the most tangible, impactful ways to live the Jewish value of tikkun olam, and we continue to raise awareness on campuses throughout the country.”
