Teen Takes a Turn on Class Project

Apr 15, 2011 by Gift of Life News

Sometimes a simple classroom lesson inspires and motivates one person to make a commitment for a lifetime.  For graduating senior Civi Burger, a public-speaking assignment was just that moment.  Researching and learning about bone marrow donation, and specifically, Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, opened Civi’s eyes about how she and her classmates can, and do, make a difference in the world.

“One small assignment made a world of difference for me.  I was told to do an inspirational speech for my public speaking class.  When I began my preparations I Google ’inspirational speech topics’ and I stumbled across donating blood.  That got me thinking about the topic and I had vaguely heard of donating bone marrow so I typed ’donating bone marrow’ into the search engine and began my research.  Once I started I couldn’t stop.  There were so many amazing success stories online and on YouTube, such as baby Matthew with his 2 donors and Rabbi Avraham Goldhar, a member of my community and my friend’s father, who saved a man from Israel.  Then I stumbled upon Jay Feinberg’s story.  I read how Becky was the last girl, on the last drive, after years of testing tens of thousands of people, and indeed she turned out to be his match.  She was one person who decided to get involved and not only saved Jay’s life but the lives of 2,200 other patients who received successful transplants.

Jay’s story and all the other astounding stories helped me to realize the power of one.  One ordinary person can save a life.  In Judaism, we believe as stated in the Talmud that, ’saving one life is considered as if you are saving the entire world’.  We all would like to save the world.  Now we have a golden opportunity right in front of us!  How can we not grab this?  After hours of watching and reading interviews and researching the facts, I had compiled my speech.  After I gave my speech my teacher and classmates recognized the importance of the cause I was advocating for, and convinced me to organize a Gift of Life drive at my high school.  Although I am not yet 18, and couldn’t be tested myself, 34 seniors from Bruriah High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey were swabbed and are currently on the registry.  I plan to study in Israel next year and would like to organize a drive for my Yeshiva and other Yeshivot in the area.  It is my fervent hope to get as many registered as possible.  I won’t stop there.  I will continue to organize drives in college and anywhere else that I can.  Although I am only 17 years old, I still feel that I can make a difference by educating my peers and organizing various drives.  I am looking forward to any other way that I can help contribute to Gift of Life.  Perhaps one day I will get a call informing me that I am the lucky donor.  Even if you are never called to be a donor, there are many other contributions that can be made.  Whether it’s by raising awareness, organizing a drive, or simply getting a cheek swabbed, joining the Gift of Life registry will be the time of your life, and possibly someone else’s too!”

Civi, I extend my heartfelt thanks for bringing Gift of Life to Bruriah High School.  Thanks to the graduating seniors who stepped forward and joined the registry.  Welcome to the Gift of Life Family.
