Gift of Life Marrow Registry COVID-19 Statement

Mar 17, 2020 by Gift of Life News

Patients battling blood cancer, sickle cell disease and inherited immune disorders rely on Gift of Life Marrow Registry to provide lifesaving stem cell and bone marrow transplants at a time when every minute matters.

We are taking rigorous measures to ensure the ongoing health and safety of our donors, while playing a constructive role in supporting our stem cell and bone marrow transplant partners as they work to continue the critical care of patients.

To ensure continuity of our life-saving services, we are focusing our registry recruitment efforts online by encouraging volunteer donors to request a swab kit on our website, giftoflife.org/register, or by calling 1-800-962-7769.

Having pioneered the use of buccal (cheek) swabs in lieu of blood samples for donor recruitment, and as the first registry in the world to open a registry-integrated stem cell collection center, our goal now is to help donors adhere to the social distancing guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while still making it possible for us to help children and adults find matching transplant donors. Once ordered, the registration kits are sent to the potential donor’s home, the donor performs the cheek swab, returns the kit to Gift of Life in the postage-paid envelope, and is entered into the registry.

We are taking on added roles during this crisis and working with hospitals and other stem cell collection facilities to increase the number of stem cell collections we perform to help preserve hospital resources. This is all happening at our state-of-the-art Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Gift of Life–Be The Match Collection Center in Boca Raton, Fla.

Additionally, our logistics team is working to overcome global travel restrictions to ensure critical transplants are not delayed.
