In 2001, Ruthie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and told she would need a bone marrow transplant. Unable to find a donor in her family, Ruthie turned to the worldwide registries in the search for an unrelated donor who might be a match. Recognizing the need to grow the registry, Ruthie's brother, Warren Spector, spearheaded a groundbreaking effort to recruit donors and raise the funds for the testing. The response was enormous. Nearly thousands of new donors came to Ruthie's aid and joined the Gift of Life Registry.
We are pleased to report that Ruthie had a successful transplant with a Gift of Life donor in 2002, and met her hero, Josh Hoffman for the very first time at Gift of Life's 2003 Partners for Life Gala in New York. They are now family.
