Project Life is a national movement to increase the potential pool of bone marrow and tissue donors by testing and registering college students with a simple cheek swab. Why? Because bone marrow treatments are the only hope for many people diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other blood cancers and diseases, but 60 percent of those in need of a life-giving donation currently can’t find a donor match. Students have a profound opportunity to save a human life. It takes only minutes to get tested and registered, and it’s simple, painless and non-invasive.
In 1989, a group of caring students at Davidson College approached President John Kuykendall and asked for his support in connecting the school to the cause of identifying potential donors for the national registry. On March 13, 1990, Davidson College held its inaugural Project Life bone marrow donor recruitment drive. Close to 500 students, staff and faculty stepped forward to join the Project Life movement and an incredible 20-year story began.
