Kindness, Service and Remembrance Day on 9-11

Sep 09, 2011 by Gift of Life News

September 11th, 2001 was a day that rocked the nation, and many citizens since then have given up their lives to protect our country.  This Sunday, Gift of Life will be participating in a tribute to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 alongside JCC of Mid-Westchester in honor of those who lost their lives.

The Day of Chesed (Kindness), Service, and Remembrance is part of a nationwide tribute that seeks to organize the largest day of good deeds and charitable services in United States history. It’s a day where community members can join together to remember the events of the past and give back to ensure a better future. There are events and opportunities where everyone can get involved, from kids to adults.

As part of this special event, Gift of Life will be hosting a donor recruitment drive. We want to give back and honor those who lost their lives by saving the lives of those who are suffering from various blood cancers and diseases. Attendees of the event have the opportunity to give the Gift of Life by joining the national bone marrow registry. Other events for the day include a collection for overseas troops; community blood drive; hair donations for Locks of Love, which benefits children with medical hair loss; and a home care/medical supplies collection.

Children have the opportunity to participate in Tzedakah art projects, where one of the options is to create a link for the Chesed Chain to demonstrate the strength of people joining together to help others in need. They can also decorate lunch bags for the hungry and make a greeting card for overseas troops. Teenagers can take part in the Teen Tribute Program, which includes a car wash where all money raised will benefit Gift of Life and go toward processing kits on our waiting list. Other projects preparing lunches for the hungry and making blankets for children.

Giving back is something anyone can do. In the wake of tragedy, it’s a reminder that kindness and a giving spirit can prosper. If you live in the Mid-Westchester area and would like to go show your support and join the registry, the event will be held at The JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale, NY.
